Bachelors degrees usually take three or four years to complete full-time (normally four years if you're doing a sandwich course, which includes a year in industry or abroad. Bachelors degree courses start throughout the year, although most begin in September or October. Different courses will assess you in different ways. Generally, bachelors degrees involve a mixture of exams and coursework. Some ask you for a written dissertation that you produce at the end of the course.Bachelors degrees are graded: first, upper-second (2:1), lower second (2:2), third, pass, fail. A third or above means you get a bachelors degree with honours. A masters degree is a qualification of academic study. It can be research based, a taught course, or a mixture of both, and will take at least 12 months of full-time study to complete. The number of lectures, seminars, projects and research papers will vary depending on the type of course and the institution. You may also have to submit a dissertation at the end of your course.Grades are normally awarded as distinction, merit (optional), pass, fail.

Some masters degrees, such as in business administration and law, prepare you for a career in a particular field. Others, like the master of research can prepare you for a doctorate qualification A doctorate qualification gives you the opportunity to undertake an original piece of research. It will usually take at least three years of full-time study to complete.Throughout the course, you will be expected to work independently, with guidance from a supervisor. The supervisor advises you whether your research is on track and about deadlines you have to meet.During the first one to three years of your doctorate, you will research your chosen topic and plan your dissertation. In your final year, you will normally write up your dissertation. Many doctorate courses lead to a qualification such as a Doctor of Philosophy - a PhD or Dphil.Doctorates are usually awarded as either a pass or fail; in rare cases with a distinction. When choosing a course, think about which subjects interest you, the type of qualification you want and which style of studying suits you best. You'll need to look beyond the course title. Even courses with exactly the same name may (and probably will) differ enormously. Look carefully at the differences between courses within your subject before deciding which to apply for.For example, if you're interested in construction but wish to use your creative skills, you may be better suited to a Building Design Management course than a Building Project Management course.

Higher education courses are put together by individual universities and colleges, so what's included (and how they are delivered) will vary enormously - drawing on the strengths of the staff and facilities on hand. Many courses are 'modular'. This means they are made up of different subject blocks which deal with particular areas of interest. Modules may be delivered using a range of lectures, seminars and/or workshops. You may have some say over some or all of the modules you study, or you may not. Either way, it's important to look at the components that will make up your course. Some courses include placements, 'sandwich' years or even years abroad studying or gaining work experience. Foundation Degrees, for example, include work-based learning. These options may be of interest to you personally, or to future employers. If so, seek out courses that offer these opportunities

The wide range of undergraduate courses on offer gives you a huge amount of flexibility. You can enroll on a bachelor's degree from the beginning or you can start by taking a two-year HND or Foundation Degree and then top up to a degree afterwards if you want. You can also study for a single honours degree where you'll focus entirely on one subject or study two subjects in a joint honours or combined honours degree.
